Piedmont

Piemonte, the region in northwest Italy whose capital is Turin, is home to some of Italy’s best-known wines, including sparkling Moscato d’Asti and the powerful, full-bodied reds Barolo and Barbaresco.  The latter are produced from the Nebbiolo grape, whose tannins and structure make it an ideal candidate for long ageing, though Langhe Nebbiolo made with younger vines or blended with Barbera or Dolcetto can be more approachable in its youth.  The town of Gavi gives its name to a famous dry white produced from the Cortese grape, noted for its mineral qualities and floral bouquet.
