Castilla

Castilla-La Mancha occupies the arid plateau in central Spain adjoining Madrid and accounts for nearly half of Spanish wine production.  Airén is the most widely planted white variety and yields a crisp, dry wine; Viura (also known as Macabeo) is also grown in the region. Castilian reds can use any of a number of varieties, including Tempranillo, Garnacha (the Spanish name for Grenache), Monastrell (Mourvèdre) and Syrah (Shiraz).
