The Marche region on central Italy’s Adriatic coast is best known for Verdicchio – the name a reference to its green-hued grapes. This dry white is an ideal match for fish or fried stuffed olives, a regional speciality. Favoured red varieties in the Marche are Montepulciano and Sangiovese. The rare and ancient Lacrima grape is native to the area around Ancona and is used to produce Lacrima di Morro d’Alba, its interesting name – ‘teardrop’ – referring to the tendency of the grapes to burst and ‘shed tears’.
